Nokia E51

http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-e51/nokia-e51-1.jpgExpected Q4 2007
20th September 2007
NEW! - Play / download (http://media.switchpod.com//users/mobilegazette/nokiae51.mp3) MP3 podcast
The Nokia E51 is Nokia's new entry-level phone in the E-Series business range, replacing the Nokia E50 which unfortunately failed to make much of an impression on customers.

"Entry level" is a term that might be a little misleading here. The E51 is a very highly specified handset compared with most of the Nokia range, however the new features that Nokia have included in the E51 really signify that Nokia want to take the E-series of handsets to the next level.
This is a Symbian S60 3rd Edition smartphone, and the Nokia E51 is a quad-band GSM 850/900/1900/1900 MHz phone with dual band UMTS 850/2100 MHz which will make it useful for business travellers. Unlike the E50, the Nokia E51 now adds UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (3.5G) plus WiFi. This makes the E51 useful as an accessory for a laptop, and the inclusion of WiFi also opens up the possibility of using the handset for voice over IP (VOIP), especially with a corporate VOIP gateway - Nokia provide solutions that will work with Cisco and Alcatel systems. At Mobile Gazette, we think that corporate VOIP using devices of this type is likely to be a major growth area during 2008.
http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-e51/nokia-e51-2.jpgBack to the phone - there's the now familiar 240x320 pixel display in 16 million colours that is common to many other Nokia devices. There's 130MB of internal memory expandable with a microSD slot, Bluetooth and of course all the usual features you'd expect from a Nokia There's also an FM radio and of course a multimedia player.

One controversial feature of the Nokia E51 is bound to be the inclusion of a 2 megapixel camera on the back. Many businesses simply do not want cameras on their phones because they represent a security risk in some areas. We very much hope that the E51 comes in an optional no-camera configuration as an alternative.
Nokia have tweaked the interface a little, and there's now a "Home" button instead of the S60 menu key to give access to commonly used applications. There's also a dedicated email key plus a "new message" indicator light. The E51 supports Nokia Intellisync and it's quite likely that there will be a range of push email solutions available for it.
At 100 grams, the Nokia E51 is pretty light for a 3G phone with WiFi and a QVGA display. Talktime has been quoted as a somewhat disappointing four and a half hours or so, we don't know if that's on 3G or 2G though. Standby time is around 13 days.
The Nokia E51 will be priced at around €350 before tax and subsidy, comes in Silver, Black and Rose colour combinations and should be available during Q4 2007.

Nokia 6301 with VOIP / UMA

http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-6301/nokia-6301-combo.jpgExpected Q4 2007
20th September 2007
NEW! - Play / download (http://media.switchpod.com/users/mobilegazette/nokia6301.mp3) MP3 podcast
The Nokia 6301 is a version of the hugely popular Nokia 6300 (http://www.mobilegazette.com/nokia-6300-06x11x30.htm), but now with added WiFi which allows the 6301 to access VOIP calls over a UMA gateway.. or to put it in more simple terms, the Nokia 6301 can make cheap voice calls over the internet.

Most readers will be familiar with the 6300 so we won't dwell for too long on the 6301's technical details other than to briefly say that it has a 240x320 pixel display, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expandable memory (128MB in the box), an FM radio and Bluetooth. The WiFi circuitry in the Nokia 6301 adds just 2 grams to the handset's weight, coming in at 93 grams.
Cosmetically, the Nokia 6301 comes in a colour scheme called "Cocoa" which is subtly different from the 6300's silver/black colour combination. Both the 6300 and 6301 are quite elegant and understated phones.
http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-6301/nokia-6301-desk-stand.jpgSetting up a UMA gateway is probably not the sort of thing that most people would want to do at home, but fear not - the Nokia 6301 will first be offered by Orange in their Unik / Unique range of "convergence devices". Since Orange also offers broadband services, it is in an ideal position to offer this sort of technology. Of course you can also use UMA at certain WiFi hotspots and if you're a business user than this type of VOIP solution might be something worth considering.

WiFi does tend to drain the battery somewhat - standby time is just 100 hours (4 days on UMA) with 3 hours talktime. Nokia provide a handy desk stand in the box so that the 6301 can be charged more easily. On GSM, the 6301's standby time is 14 days with up to 3 hours talktime.
Nokia say that the 6301 will cost around €230 (around £150) before tax and subsidy, although most customers are likely to get this in some sort of package deal. The phone should be available during Q4 2007, initially on Orange and possibly other networks later

Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-5610/nokia-5610-combo.jpgExpected Q4 2007
29th August 2007
NEW! - Play / download (http://media.switchpod.com//users/mobilegazette/nokia5610.mp3) MP3 podcast
The Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is a midrange 3G slider phone that is full of features that you'd previously only expect to find in a high-end device.

Priced at around €300 / £200 / $400 before tax and subsidy, the Nokia 5610 comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.2" QVGA display, quad-band GSM with dual-band 850/2100 UMTS, microSD expandable memory (up to 4GB), an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth and a novel slider key for one-touch media access.
The XpressMusic branding should tell you that Nokia consider this to be a multimedia phone, the 5610 can directly access Nokia's new Nokia Music Store service, it comes with dedicated media buttons and it can play back MP3, AAC, M4A and WMA files. But the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic also scores well when it comes to the camera, not only is it a 3.2 megapixel unit, but it has a flash, autofocus and can capture video clips at up to 640 x 480 pixel resolution. These sort of digital imaging capabilities were previously restricted to high-end N-Series phones.

It isn't a smartphone - the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is a Symbian Series 40 device which means that the software can't be expanded, but then most people aren't bothered about that. It does seem to deliver pretty much all the features that most consumers would want, and at a pretty reasonable price.
The Nokia 5610 XpressMusic will be available in red and blue colour combinations during Q4 2007.

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic weighs just 70 grams and is only 9.9mm thick, but it is a surprisingly feature packed phone, and one that offers very good value for money too.

http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/nokia/nokia-5310/nokia-5310-3q.jpgThe XpressMusic branding means that this is a midrange music phone. Priced at around €225 / £150 / $300 before tax and subsidy, the 5310 isn't too expensive and is in reach of many prepay customers. For the money you get a tri-band GSM phone with a 2" 240x320 pixel display, microSD expandable memory, a multimedia player, a 2 megapixel digital camera, stereo Bluetooth and an FM radio.
There are also dedicated media keys on the side of the 5310 XpressMusic, and the handset can play back MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA and M4A audio clips through a standard 3.5mm jack plug, stereo Bluetooth headset or a set of speakers.
Memory is expandable up to 4GB, and Nokia say that this means that the 5310 XpressMusic can store a maximum of 3000 songs.
-
It's a nice looking handset and we think that the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic offers good value for money in a very lightweight package.
Nokia say that the 5310 XpressMusic should be available during Q4 2007.
